Lecture | Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression: can they be prevented? (In French)
Come along to a talk by Dr. Michel Maziade on the latest scientific findings regarding psychiatric disorders and the persistent myths surrounding people who suffer from them.
Recent scientific findings are transforming our understanding of major psychiatric disorders and their origins. In particular, we are discovering that their history can begin well before diagnosis and that they result from complex trajectories in which genetic vulnerability, development and the environment interact. Examining them from childhood onwards enables us to better understand how these trajectories develop, without confusing risk with destiny. Above all, this opens up avenues for the prevention of these disorders. Dr. Michel Maziade will also address the persistent myths that harm people with mental illness and their families.
Dr. Michel Maziade is a professor of psychiatry at Laval University and a psychiatrist at the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale and CERVO. As the founder of the CERVO Research Centre and a pioneer in psychiatric genetics in Canada, his research focuses on the neurodevelopmental origins and early prevention of mental illness. His research has shown that certain signs of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can be detected as early as childhood, paving the way for new preventive strategies. The author of major discoveries and three patents, and co-founder of diaMentis Inc., he also created the HoPE programme for children at risk. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, he was appointed a Knight of the National Order of Quebec in 2011 and inducted into the Académie des Grands Québécois in 2020. In 2023, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research ranked him among the eight Canadian researchers with the greatest impact, across all disciplines.
